College Preparation For First Generation College Students

college
Just this afternoon I had a brief conversation with a woman whose daughter is now in high school. My wife and I have a son who is now in college and when (I'll call her) Rosa and I originally talked about our kids some years ago her daughter was in the 4th grade. That was seven years ago. We've talked about school and college and college preparation before. It just so happens that I volunteer with a group called Reality Changers that could be a help to her daughter. I have been a tutor with them for over five years and now I also teach public speaking to those who come early to our Monday night program in Solana Beach, California. Part of the reason that I volunteer is that I didn't have the resources available 30 years ago that Reality Changers provides. I know what it is like to be...

First of all, the ban on sodas over 16 oz in New York City is ludicrous in its single mindedness. It's ludicrous because the ban says nothing about still being able to buy a gallon of ice cream, jumbo popcorn, Twinkies, a 40 oz. malt liquor, or three 8 oz. Mountain Dews. However this new measure is a step in the right direction in fighting a war against obesity and diabetes. Here are some scary facts:- Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes affect more than 1 billion people worldwide, including 100 million Americans and 50% of Americans over the age of 65.- More than half of Americans are overweight and 1/3 of Americans can be classified as clinically obese.- 24 million Americans have Type 2 Diabetes and 1 in 3 unaware that they have it- Every 10 seconds an American dies from diabetes related ...

Do Your College Research Early

college
All across the country, there are high school seniors and their parents who discover a bit late that the requirements for a high school diploma are not automatically equivalent to those for admission to college, not even to the more inclusive state schools where they assumed a relatively easy admittance. High schools focus on state high school graduation requirements while trying to guide "college track" students to courses they most likely will need. That means you and your teenager need to determine at the beginning of his or her high school career which courses will meet admission requirements to colleges of interest. The sooner you start asking questions and doing research, the more prepared your teenager will be to enter the college of his choice. The following is an example of ...
